July 24

Greetings, Nomidachi!

How are you doing?

Though business has been a little slower than usual this summer, we certainly are enjoying the chance to drink sake outside in the (mostly) fabulous summer weather and moderate heat. It's a nearly daily reminder that premium sake just makes everything at least a little bit better . . .

Optimistic that we've still got quite a bit of summer to go, we are excited to announce that a group of summer release and namazake from importer Japan Prestige is about to make its way to Saké Nomi's refrigerators. We’ve just received word from our distributor that these sake we ordered back in the beginning of the year are in transit from California, and they are eagerly waiting to deliver to us.

Tasting notes (some from the importer, since these sake are so new and rare that we have not had a chance to taste them) and prices follow below. Our allotment is only a couple dozen bottles of each variety, so please get in touch ASAP if you're interested in reserving some bottles.

Please keep in mind the
10% case discount will still be in effect for orders of 6 or more bottles.

We haven't yet decided the order in which we will take delivery from the distributor, but your input/inquiries/orders will definitely help us to determine the schedule.

If you are interested, please place your
order by Tuesday, July 30, and we will have the first couple selections available for pick up in store shortly thereafter (by the end of the week, we're hoping).

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions related to these or any other of our premium sake selections.

Thank you so much, stay cool and hydrated, and Kanpai!

July 1

Hello, Nomidachi!

'Sorry we haven't been super communicative the past couple months and, quite frankly, it's hard to believe we're already in July.

We managed to blow right by Saké Nomi's 17th anniversary in mid-June, but we plan on commemorating it in mid-August with some special guests and events, so please bear with us and stay tuned.

What have we been up to, you might ask. Well, in addition to the day-to-day tasks and challenges keeping our small business on its toes, we've been kind of consumed with tracking down delicious premium Japanese sake to add to our roster. We've listed some of the more recent additions below, and we hope that you'll have a chance to stop by in the near future to give them a try.

As always, thank you so much for your patronage, encouragement, and friendship. You're the best, and we're so thankful to have you along for this sake-soaked journey.

New (and new-ish) Sake Arrivals

Kouro JunmaiGinjo (Kumamoto)                                                              This is pretty much the crown jewel of our recent gets (we've been in pursuit of this sake for the past 18 years!). Very fragrant ginjo-ka (“essence of ginjo”), with notes of lavender, strawberries, and something akin to candy. Assertive flavor and significant heft in the body (the bottle is HEAVY, too!), with pleasantly lingering spice in the finish. As it warms in the glass, astringency on the edges becomes more apparent. $100/720 ml bottle (also currently featured by the glass)

Mimurosugi Yamada Nishiki
Junmai Ginjo (Nara)
Subtle greenish golden tint, with mild fragrances of apple, pear, peach, and strawberry. Initial impact on the palate is strong, suggesting a weighted fruitiness to follow, but instead the flavors are reigned in, showing a settled, quiet elegance and an overall superb balance. $55/720 ml bottle

Urakasumi “Misty Bay”
Junmai (Miyagi)                                              Grainy, chestnut nose. Soft, quiet, and balanced. Straightforward, low-key sake possessing richness and depth. One of Johnnie’s “desert island saké,” we’re so pleased to have it back in rotation! (Featured by the glass this week, too!)
$40/720 ml bottle

Haneya Tsubasa "50" Nama
Junmai Daiginjo (Toyama)
Golden, tending toward green, coloring. Floral, grapey nose. Moderately full mouthfeel. Impactful and fruity, with good acid and nama effervescence. Fumigiku has been doing year-round brewing since 2012, making this namazake available throughout the year. $55/720 ml bottle

Haneya Kirabi Nama
Junmai Ginjo (Toyama)
Light gold coloring, with tiny bubbles. Aromas of young green apple, lavender, and ghost pepper. Mild fruity sweetness with fresh, bubbly (cinnamon?) spiciness. Soft, but full (almost dense) mouthfeel. A terrific year-round namazake providing good bang for the buck. $45/720 ml bottle

Haneya
Tokubetsu Junmai (Toyama)
Greenish gold coloring, with notes of toffee, malt, brown sugar, and caramel in the nose. Really soft and full mouthfeel. Overall, kind of semi-dry, low-key, and casual . Lukewarm/room temperature is very comfortable. $45/720 ml bottle

(From the brewer, "The wish is express (sic) the desire to lift the drinker's spirits up as if giving you wings to fly.")

Emishiki "Sensation White" Junmai (Shiga)
Ripe apple aroma with a fairly rich golden tint. Light, soft mouthfeel with solid acidity and a surprisingly dry finish. Check out the cool label and the paper it's made from! $40/720 ml bottle

Emishiki "Sensation Black"
Junmai (Shiga)

Fine, golden tint. Notes of mint, green apple, and strawberry in the nose. Viscous mouthfeel. Savory and consistent on the palate from start to its quick, disappearing finish. $40/720 ml bottle

Koro Mebuki Junmai Shiboritate Shinshu (Kumamoto)
Citrus notes (lime) in the nose. Light-bodied, fruity, and floral. Outstanding with parmesan cheese! From the brewery that first discovered and cultivated Yeast No. 9 in 1952. $40/720 ml bottle (also currently featured by the glass)

Katsuyama Ken "50"
Junmai Ginjo (Miyagi)
Greenish amber tint, with aromas of tangerine and raspberry. Moderately full, plump mouthfeel. Light, soft, very balanced, with refined fruitiness. One taste reveals an exceptionally well made junmai daiginjo sake masquerading as a junmai ginjo! $90/720 ml bottle (also currently featured by the glass)

Harushika Fu-In Junmai Ginjo (Nara)
Refreshing aromas of citrus and cypress and a fruity ginjo aroma of ripe melon and muscat. Smooth, silky soft mouthfeel.
$65/720 ml bottle

Tsukasabotan Senchu Hassaku Tokubetsu Junmai (Kochi)
The label says “super dry,” but that’s not all! Clean, crisp, aromas of cedar, pear, and a faint minerality. Superb balance, especially between the soft texture and dry taste. Like other saké from Kochi, easy to drink in vast amounts. Ask about the name (it’s a long story . . .)
$50/720 ml bottle (also currently featured by the glass)

Tsukasabotan Fu-In
Junmai Ginjo (Kochi)
Mild aromas of strawberry and tangerine. Soft, light, and dry, with faint fruitiness. Slightly mineral, with solid acidity. An elegant saké with exquisite balance between the soft texture and dry flavor. Tsukasabotan means “King of the Peonies.”
$60/720 ml bottle

Gangi Hitotsubi Junmai (Yamaguchi)
Greenish gold due to lack of charcoal filtration (muroka). Aromas of white pepper, spicy cinnamon, wet leaves, and charcoal/burnt wood. Soft, light mouthfeel, beginning vaguely sweet up front on the palate, but drier in the finish. Solid flavor and body, but NOT a typical Yamada Nishiki flavor profile. $40/720 ml bottle
