Saké Nomi
New Sake Arrivals Urakasumi “Zen” Junmai Ginjo (Miyagi)
It’s back—an all-time Saké Nomi fave! Soft and melting, with wonderfully full, smooth mouthfeel. Light yellow tint with aromas of minerals and yeast. Notes of peaches on the palate. Incredible viscosity in this highly polished (daiginjo level) saké almost makes texture more dominant than flavor. $80/720 ml bottle Ohmine 3 Grain Omachi Junmai Daiginjo (Yamaguchi) Excellence Award winner at the 2023 14th Omachi Summit, the brewer describes it thusly: “In chilled temperature, the moment it touches your mouth there’s a very gentle attack with the aroma of peony and lychee, and from the middle to the end, a juicy richness reminiscent of yellow peaches expands.” Extremely limited availability. $65/720 ml bottle Narutotai “Black” Muroka Ginjo Nama Genshu (Tokushima) Cousin to the infamous “Oil Can.” Discernable orange/amber tint due to lack of charcoal filtration (muroka). Sweet aromas of strawberry and cake icing. Viscous, light, soft mouthfeel, but full-bodied, with a strong, intense presence. Hints of dark chocolate bitterness. Good with barbecue and miso--a real mouthful. $70/720 ml bottle
Masumi Arabashiri Junmai Ginjo (Nagano)
Bright, fruity, and all-around awesome. Aromas of melon and pear, with a pleasantly crisp acidity. This namazake is also a genshu(undiluted), so at 17-18% alcohol, it packs a lovingly assertive punch. $50/720 ml bottle Urakasumi Shiboritate Tokubetsu Junmai Namazake (Miyagi) Faint golden tint/greenish glow. Notes of pumpkin, vegetation, cinnamon, and plum in the nose. Full, soft, velvety texture, with some plum tartness and slight effervescence. Displays undeniable presence and umami/depth of flavor. $65/720 ml bottle With its abundantly fruity, almost perfumed nose of banana, strawberry, caramelized pear, and candied fruit, this sake boldly announces the presence of famed CEL-24 yeast right from the start. The acidity perfectly balances the sweetness and allows one to enjoy the harmony of the flavors and aromas. Its delicate mouthfeel and slightly lower (14%) ABV makes it just right for “session sipping.” $55/720 ml bottle Mimurosugi Yamada Nishiki Junmai Ginjo (Nara)
Subtle greenish golden tint, with mild fragrances of apple, pear, peach, and strawberry. Initial impact on the palate is strong, suggesting a weighted fruitiness to follow, but instead the flavors are reigned in, showing a settled, quiet elegance and an overall superb balance. $55/720 ml bottle
Urakasumi “Misty Bay” Junmai (Miyagi) Grainy, chestnut nose. Soft, quiet, and balanced. Straightforward, low-key sake possessing richness and depth. One of Johnnie’s “desert island saké,” we’re so pleased to have it back in rotation! $40/720 ml bottle
