February 16

Hello, Nomidachi!

How are you? Thirsty, I hope . . .

I just received word from one of the distributors that the first wave of limited spring release namazake from importer Japan Prestige has landed in their warehouse, and they are eager to unload them on me.

Our allotment of all the sake listed below is 2 cases/24 bottles. There are 3 selections that we are receiving for the first time, but you may be familiar with the rest from past years.

Our plan is to bring in 2-3 varities every week for the next four weeks or so. We haven’t determined the order in which we will receive them, but your input (orders) will greatly influence it.

All prices listed will be reduced 10% for cumulative orders totaling 6 bottles or more, making it a “case” discount.

If possible, please confirm your interest by Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Please let us know if you have any questions or special requests concerning these beautiful brews.

Kanpai, and please don’t stay too thirsty, friends!

Gokyo Arabashiri “First Run” Junmai Nama Genshu (Yamaguchi)
Tart, young fruit flavors of pear and apple.  Soft mouthfeel is in pleasant contrast to solid acidity and slightly bitter notes in the finish.  The brewery, Sakai Shuzo, was established in 1871.
$65/720 ml bottle

Harushika “Spring Deer” Shiboribana
Junmai Ginjo (Nara)     Slight yellow tint, with essence of strawberry and gardenia.  Clean and vaguely citrus. Tingly and astringent character, with mineral notes in the somewhat dry finish.  $50/720 ml bottle

Daisekkei Tokubetsu
Junmai Muroka Nama Genshu (Nagano)
Golden green tint. Definitely fizzy and lively with tiny bubbles when the bottle is popped open. Notes of white grapes and lemon in the nose. Richly flavored, dry and displaying minerality, with a dry, slightly bitter finish. $60/720 ml bottle

Hiraizumi Four Seasons Shiboritate Yamahai
Junmai Nama Genshu (Akita)
Brand new to Washington! According to the importer, “Citrus and fresh acidity with light umami and bittersweet like lychee. Not only clear texture, but also soft sweetness coming from koji is harmonized impressively. Crisp finish.” $65/720 ml bottle

Ichinokura Shiboritate
Junmai Nama Genshu (Miyagi)
Brand new to Washington! From the importer: “Refreshing aroma of melon, fresh herbs and steamed rice. Ricey umami and refined acidity is well harmonized with slight astringency accompanied with short finish.” $60/720 ml bottle

Kamikokoro Fuyu no Tsuki
Junmai Ginjo Muroka Nama (Okayama)
Tingly notes of white peach and champagne in the nose. Greenish gold, almost amber coloring. Mild mineral effervescence with some body and weight to it. Dense, compact, rich flavor, and surprisingly semi-dry for a SMV -3 sake. $65/720 ml bottle

Kamikokoro Toukagen Shiboritate
Junmai Ginjo Nama Genshu (Okayama)
Pronounced golden hue, with notes of white, sweet peaches in the nose. Rich sweetness gives way to cinnamon-tinged spiciness riding on a pleasant viscosity. This nama genshu (unpasteurized and undiluted sake) is brewed with a yeast cultivated from white peaches. Kamikokoro means “heart of the gods.” $60/720 ml bottle

Kisoji Funaguchi Shiboritate
Junmai Ginjo Nama Genshu (Nagano)
New to Washington! From the importer: “Light and freshness reminiscent of herbs. The initial impression is of a smooth sweetness and fizzy feel, but the finish brings a clean, tight dryness.”
$65/720 ml bottle

Koshi no Homare Shiboritate
Junmai Nama Genshu (Niigata)
Elements of rice and yeast in the nose. Entry is quiet and soft, but then the brashness and boldness of the genshu (undiluted sake) makes its presence known. A coating, dairy-like, “feel the heat” spread to the finish. Direct and unostentatious; it’s all about the character of the local rice. $50/720 ml bottle

February 5

Greetings, Nomidachi!

A quick, no-nonsense, and not very graphic (in terms of number of photos) newsletter to let you know about some great brews scheduled to arrive on our shelves tomorrow.

Oh, and Happy Bob Marley Birthday. You can guess what Johnnie's listening to all day today . . .

As the emcee at a Bob Marley and the Wailers concert at the legendary Roxy night club said in introducing their encore, "We appreciate your appreciation!"

We hope you and yours are keeping healthy and happy, and we hope to see you soon.

Arigatou & Kanpai!

New, Limited Production Brews Arriving Tomorrow: Feb. 7

Now that we’ve all survived Dry January in our own ways, we need to make up for lost time and opportunities. In our book, that means, LET’S DRINK SOME GOOD SAKE!!!

The brand new-to-washington selections mentioned below are in limited supply, and the initial allotment arriving tomorrow is nearly sold out. However, we are shooting for an additional delivery Friday, February 10, so if you're interested in ordering anything, please get in touch ASAP.

We had a chance to do a much too quick tasting with the distributor last week, so while we are not as intimately familiar with the sake yet (though we soon will be--great perk of the job!), they are all from trusted and favored breweries, and the tasting notes here are from the importer.

Now, to the sake . . .

KID
Tokubetsu Junmai Omachi (Wakayama)
Introduced in Japan in 2017 in limited production, the sake “opens with aromas of muscat and apple, followed by a smooth umami flavor that finishes dry and crisp, leaving you wanting more.”
Price: $60/720 ml bottle

Akabu
Junmai Daiginjo (Iwate)
“Akabu Junmai Daiginjo displays aromas of freshly bloomed flowers and ripe green melon. Subdued acidity, sweetness, and smooth umami work in harmony to bring you back asking for more.” (We are beginning to detect a theme here.)
Price: $100/720 ml bottle

Kamoshibito Kuheiji Kyou Den Omachi 40
Junmai Daiginjo (Aichi)
The Omachi rice used to make this sake was grown in cooperation between the brewery and rice farmers in a specially designated area in Okayama prefecture.
“Omachi rice is typically known for its rich and earthy characteristics. Kuheiji created this sake to show how Omachi rice can be elegant, as well. With aromas of ripe red apples, Japanese pears, and white peaches, you will feel Japanese spices like Kinome, Shiso or Sansho, as well as herbs like basil and sage. The taste of grapefruit zest paves a path for a balanced and structured acidity.”
Price: $120/720 ml bottle

A few more details and photos of the sake can be found on the importer’s website at
